WEEE sector joins forces to fund TV ad campaign
Some of the biggest WEEE producer compliance schemes and reprocessors in the UK last month announced that they are to team up and jointly fund the production of a TV advert aimed at raising householder awareness of WEEE recycling. The eight companies are intending to focus on small WEEE, of which recycling rates are particularly low; while 36.6% of household WEEE was collected for recycling in 2009, the collection rate for small WEEE is less than half this.
Justin Greenaway, contracts manager for WEEE reprocessor SWEEEP/Kuusakoski, is coordinating the effort, after claiming that householder buy-in was "fundamental" to boosting WEEE recycling rates, pointing out that "if people don't know they need to do something, they won't".
"This is why the sector has felt the need to take matters into its own hands and through working with WRAP, we are providing the funds to develop an advert that will begin to take the message to the consumer. It's great to see the industry coming together and work towards a common goal," he added. It has been reported that each company is providing £4000 in funding, and the advert is due to be completed in time for the "run up to Christmas" in areas that supported the activities of the funding parties.
